Artist's Comments

This is the eleventh picture in my Japan 2008 collection.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Japan is its sense of spirituality. The Daimonji (Japanese character 大 ) on the hill near the Golden Pavillion is lit every year during the O-Bon festival to send off the ancestral spirits that have come to visit their descendants, along with the other five designs that are part of the Gozan no Okuribi (五山の送り火 ), which are lit later in the same night.

Picture taken on June 28, 2008.

For some reason the image of "Viva el Peru" came into my mind. o_O

What about the lantern ceremony?
:iconmatsuiichi:
O-Bon isn't just about lanterns and stuff...I was only talking about the Gozan no Okuribi here. :P

Yes, for the record, there are paper lanterns. Just...not here. XD

So when do they do the floating-lanterns-in-the-water thing?
:iconmatsuiichi:
Before the lighting of the bonfires, like the location in the picture. This part of the ceremony (the bonfires on the mountains) is actually done at the very end of O-Bon.
